How To Share Access To Your Domain From A Previous Website Provider

Updated this week

Article Content:

Short Answer

Ask your current provider for the transfer/EPP (Auth) code and to unlock the domain. Then share the code with Rebolt at [email protected] so we can complete the setup for you.

Overview

If your domain was purchased or managed by a past web company, or a registrar we don’t have a step-by-step guide for, you can still move it to Rebolt smoothly. A domain transfer uses a one-time Auth code and a brief unlock period to let us connect your site and manage DNS reliably.

Steps

  1. Identify the registrar/manager.
Check past invoices, emails, or WHOIS records, or contact the agency that built your last site.

  2. Request the transfer code.
Ask your current provider for the EPP/Auth code for your domain.

  3. Ask them to unlock the domain.
Registrars require the domain to be unlocked before the transfer.

  4. Send details to Rebolt.
Email the Auth code (and the registrar name, if known) to [email protected].

  5. We complete the transfer + DNS setup.
Our team will initiate the move, keep your website/email working, and confirm once everything is live.

Tips

  • Keep access active: Don’t cancel your old service until we confirm the transfer is complete.

  • Protect email: If you use custom email (e.g., Microsoft/Google), share those MX records so we keep mail flowing.

  • Timeframe: Most transfers finish in 24–72 hours once unlocked and approved by the current registrar.

FAQs

  • What if I don’t know who holds my domain?
Check billing emails or search your domain in a WHOIS lookup to find the registrar of record. If you’re still stuck, email us and we’ll help you track it down.

  • Will my site go down?
We plan the transfer and DNS changes to avoid downtime. If any risk exists (rare), we’ll coordinate timing with you.

  • Can I keep my domain at the current registrar?
Yes. If you prefer, you can leave the domain where it is and grant us DNS access instead. We’ll advise on the easiest route.
